Elections of Islam Karimov as the next President of Uzbekistan will be held on 29 March 2015.
Liberal Democratic Party of Uzbekistan nominated 76-year-old Islam Karimov, who has been in power since Soviet times (before he became president, he served as the first secretary of the Uzbek SSR). Formally, the Constitution of Uzbekistan prohibits any one person to hold the presidency for more than two consecutive terms. Despite this, in 2007, Karimov was re-elected for a third term. His supporters have argued that because of the amendment to the constitution (changes related to the duration of the presidential term) previous periods Karimov like “reset to zero”, which allowed him to run again.
People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan has nominated Hotamjon Ketmonov.
Narimon Umarov will run for presidency from Adolat party.
Democratic party of Uzbekistan “Milliy Tiklanish” has nominated Akmal Saidov.
